Well, I will certainly heed this warning in the future. My doctor gave me doxycycline to take to prevent getting Malaria while on my Southeast Asia trip (particularly in regards to Laos, where malaria is a slight risk). I will only be in Luang Prabang, Laos, for three days, yet I need to take the medication for 7 days before I depart for Laos and weeks after I leave the country!
Today I started with my first pill and - 30 minutes later - ugh!! I got so nauseous and then I actually did get sick - like three times. I drank water and then that couldn't even stay down. I called the doctor's office and they asked if I took it on an empty stomach. I said yes and they said this is the problem.
Now, I have to try AGAIN before calling them back to problem solve. Ugh!! I don't want to take this again. I especially don't want to take these pills for my entire trip and risk feeling sick. But then again. who wants to risk leaving yourself susceptible to malaria?! No one. It's a Catch 22. Hopefully eating will help. We will see! I have never done so much planning and prepping and preventing for a trip before. I am hoping it will all be worth it.
