Before leaving on the trip I researched and downloaded a few travel apps. It is unclear which will be of beat use but....
1. Can we just talk about Google goggles for a minute!?!? I know I'm behind on this but it's absolutely amazing. You just take a picture of something on the app (press "googles" cause there are three choices on the google search app) and it will tell you what it is, it will translate it!! Omg, so cool. I did this with some Russian vi tags post cards in the souvenir shop and it translated them immediately!! So impressive. I think that will come
In handy for the rest of the trip!
Here are some other ones:
2. Skype -would you believe I never used it before!? Since I have little clue how to get that together or if anyone who wants to talk to me has it, we will play that by war
3. What's App- this is awesome! My friend told me about this when we went to Costa Rica and it's great to text for free over wifi. I made my mom download it (it is 99 cents) but I wish even more people had it!
4. Currency Exchange (Oanda) - does exactly that! Helpful.
5. Blogger - ahem - how I'm writing this post on my cell phone and easily uploading pictures without needing a computer ;)
6. Mobilytrip - this creates a travel journal for you - on or offline. You upload pictures, tag locations, write a brief description of the day. I think their goal is for you to buy a printed one at the end. Not sure how it will be yet but I will try to keep it updated to help me remember what I did each day.
7.Tripadvisor - I love Tripadvisor and used it to pick hotels on this trip and to identify some activities I want to do. The great thing about Tripadvisor is its plethora of candid reviews, lists of activities, hotels, hostels, etc. at a glance. It is thorough and widely used by many travelers.
8.Tripcolor - I believe this is another trip journal. I'm having some issue with this (like two other apps) because of poor service and registering so I can't even discuss it appropriately.
9. Tripit - this is cool because you can simply forward flight confirmation emails to "plans@tripit.com" and then they will list all your upcoming flights, times, numbers, etc. I think if you upgrade it will tell you about delays and things too.
10. Translate - does just that. Not helpful for me visiting Southeast Asian countries because you have to type and, well, that will be - hmmm- challenging.
Anyway, google goggles is my win of the day. If anyone knows of other awesome travel apps, please share :)
